Ezekiel. Acknowledged as a Hebrew prophet. In Judaism and Christianity, he is also viewed as the 6th-century BCE author of the Book of Ezekiel, which reveals prophecies regarding the destruction of Jerusalem, the restoration to the land of Israel, and what some call the Millennial Temple (or Third Temple) visions.

Reflection

God is the most patient and forgiving Father. However, his wrath is like no other. In today’s reading, the word of the LORD came to Ezekiel portraying Israel and Judah as two idolatrous, adulteress, prostitutes. God became so angry with their whoredomes that he promised to smite them with grevious punishments.

He promised to let the people fall into the hands of their former lovers, who would instead of nicely entreating them, now hold them accountable for all of the sins of their lust of their eyes and deeds in the flesh.

Therefore I placed her in the hand of her lovers (alies), into the hand of the Assyrians whom she adored. Ezekiel 23:9 AMP

God describes Jerusalem – the capital city of Judah, as a younger sister (Oholibah) who is worse in her whoredoms than her older sister (Oholah) Samaria – the capital city of Israel. God became disgusted with them both and turned away from them.

Yet she multiplied her depravities, remembering the days of her youth, when she was actively immoral in the land of Egypt (Ezekiel 23:19 AMP).

The judgment of these two sisters serves as a warning to people today, not to consume themselves with the lusts of the flesh. By the sisters’ punishment, God says that He will put an end to the sister’s lewdness and make them stop longing to return to Egypt from whence they learned their wicked ways.

Caught in the throws of sin, a souls needs two things: repentance, and God’s mercy. Despite God’ intention to destroy nations because of sin, He has a soft heart toward repentance and does not desire that any should actually perish. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive. We have something the Children of Israel lacked. We have the sacrifice of Christ for our sins. God remembers to works of His Son on our behalf. If you find yourself in a sin condition, repent and ask God for mercy.
