Ezekiel. Acknowledged as a Hebrew prophet. In Judaism and Christianity, he is also viewed as the 6th-century BCE author of the Book of Ezekiel, which reveals prophecies regarding the destruction of Jerusalem, the restoration to the land of Israel, and what some call the Millennial Temple (or Third Temple) visions.

Reflection

God’s hand of judgement weighed heavily on the Children of Israel in response to their dippy and making their children pass through the fire. Still, His wrath did not end with the Israelites. God had vengeance for the Egyptians who oppressed them even while they were in sin.

⁸‘Therefore thus says the Lord God, “Behold, I am going to bring a sword on you and cut off (destroy) both man and animal, ⁹and the land of Egypt will be a desolation and a wasteland. And they will know [without any doubt] that I am the Lord.
“Because you said, ‘The Nile is mine and I have made it,’ ¹⁰behold (hear this), therefore, I am against you and against your rivers (the Nile, its tributaries), and I will make the land of Egypt a complete waste and a desolation, from [northern] Migdol to [southern] Syene, even as far as the border of Ethiopia (Cush). ¹¹No man’s foot will pass through it, no animal’s foot will pass through it, and it will not be inhabited for forty years. Ezekiel 29:8-11AMP

A funeral dirge is a funeral song of wailing in grief for someone’s utter despair. When God commanded destruction be brought upon a pople, he told the prophet to take up funeral dirge for the soon to be destroyed. Still, He has a hand of mercy. Though he would not restore them to their former glory, God promised to let the Egyptians return their lands and be a lowly kingdom.

¹³‘For thus says the Lord God, “At the end of forty years I will gather the Egyptians from the nations among whom they were scattered. ¹⁴I will reverse the fortunes of Egypt [as I will that of Israel] and cause them to return to the land of Pathros, the land of their origin, and there they will be a lowly kingdom. ¹⁵It will be the lowliest of the kingdoms, and it will never again exalt itself above the nations; I will diminish the Egyptians so they will never again rule over the nations. ¹⁶And Egypt will never again have the confidence of the house of Israel; their wickedness will be remembered whenever Israel looks toward them [for help]. Then they will know [without any doubt] that I am the Lord God.” Ezekiel 29:13-16 AMP

The people in today’s reading were broken by sin. Because of their froward hearts and thoughts of independent progress (thinking they achieved everything on their own without the blessing of God), God promised to lay waste to their riches and bring their pride low.

If we suffer the consequences of sin, we will be in a word, “broken.” This breaking is to humble and admonish us that we should return to the potter who formed us as mere clay in His hands. No matter how we may have been damaged – and even it is our own fault, our great “Potter” wants to put us back together again.
