SOULED OUT

A doctor has specialized skills. A doctor with no patients may as well be of any other genre trained since his or her medical skills are not being used. God gives gifts and talents for the purpose of edifying the church. Not using these is like saying that they do not exist.

How we use our gifts and talents, however, is not something that is prescribed in stone. Seek God for ways to put His work in you, to work in the church – and we now speak of the body of faith, and not a building. God is everywhere and His church is dispersed also, throughout the nations of His people.

As you endeavor to work for Him, I trust you do so not to be seen of men; yet and still you will be seen; that others may witness your good works. Do all to the glory of God, and not for the praise of men (and women).

It is good for believers to know that you are working in the body. Some will hear of your good works and glorify our Father which is in heaven. Stay humble. Without Christ, we are nothing with which to be reckoned; not a soul to be recalled. Nevertheless, I live in Christ; but not I – Christ lives in me, and I have no glory but the light in Him divine.

If we can approach this subject in regard to the words we say, may we call to mind the “B – attitudes” of Matthew 5:1-12. At first read, you may not think of these verses as exhortations for the tongue. When we understand the connection of thoughts and speech, we see why Christ informs us that out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks (Matthew 12:34).

A powerful, yet perhaps a less quoted truth is that of Proverbs 15:4. A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit (KJV).

Proverbs 15:4 reminds us that a perverse tongue is evidence of a breach in the spirit. A breach in the spirit is like a crack in the foundation of a house. Left unmended, it can cause the collapse of the entire structure. A breach in the spirit then is an opportunity for the enemy to infect the spirit with damaging influences.

Recognizing a breach in the spirit and so naming it, is not passing judgment. It is utilizing the discernment given to the household of faith for the purpose of edification. Naming the breach is not say that one is humiliated in an open forum. Naming a breach could be as humble as speaking meekly to a person who has harshly spoken, and not so in the company of accusers. If a breach is found, we who are “spiritual” (led by the Spirit of God) should strengthen the wall that is weakened.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Galatians 6:1 KJV

Remember that holiness is a lifestyle. It does not become so by some stroke of magic. It is not determined by our bank balances or fame. It is not controlled by who we know or how much we know. Holiness is a heart condition. A heart failure is a spiritual disconnect from the life source – God.

Holiness is built much like a physical structure that must withstand the elements. There is first a foundation – God and salvation through Christ after repentance. Then, the building is constructed by connecting its several parts. If pieces are missing, the structure will be unstable.

We must actively build holiness, not religion. Religion is a man-made organization of faith.

Holiness is a lifestyle – not just a religion, founded upon faith.

The parts we use to build our spiritual house should be from the right source – a pure heart of love toward God, fitly joined together by the mortar of understanding of what love for God actually means.

The Pharisees claimed to know God, not to love Him. But God said, “…if ye love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). It is only through pruning our hearts to love God more, that we can move from merely appearing close to God – to serving Him.

If we are to be SOULED out to God, we must govern our members (mind, spirit, heart, eyes, ears, tongue, hands, and feet) that they do not contradict the grace that is within us.

The words we say to ourselves and the words we say to others are intimately related. Both reflect and define our lives. “Reflect ” because we project outwardly what we hold true within; and “define” because the words we speak have power in our lives, propelling our destiny. If we allow our tongues to be unruly, we may think we are speaking dearth into others’ experiences. However, the Lord knows the power of the tongue. He has given us the procedure for combatting the wicked imagination of those who would speak harm to His servants.

To keep all things in perspective – this is the reason why we FIRST seek the kingdom of God and His righteousness, above any benefit that this world may purport: we want to have the right mind toward all temporal things (things of this world and this life), that we may be free to learn and understand the mysteries beyond this world and this life.

The popular Flip Wilson phrase, ” The Devil made me do it,” is not a valid excuse for any behavior once you know better. However, before you receive Christ, you are subject to the bondage of sin by the works of the enemy. This is why we need the Holy Spirit to keep us yielded to God. Especially in the household of faith, we should emulate the mannerisms of our most loving example, Christ himself. This is true whether we consider word or deed.

While we are helpers one to another and exhorted to follow peace (Hebrews 12:14), it is important to remember that God does not massage the egos of people who are abusive in communication with others. Although there may be times when what we have to impart is not complimentary, there is a way to make such a presentation… and a fit of rage is not the way. If we believe (and I do) that the Holy Spirit guides us into all truth (John 16:13), we must know that He will not only give us what to say but the manner and time in which to speak those things that need be heard in the household of faith.

Therefore, we should receive knowledge of a breach in the spirit with thanksgiving: understanding that the LORD will not show us the foundation requisite of mending without also making a way to restore His house of prayer. This is the same concept applied to temptation – and the reason we know that “the Devil can’t make me do anything” once I am in Christ – but I have a choice…

“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. I Corinthians 10:13 KJV

In some traditions, the unruly tongue is met with soap and water. You may have heard a parent say, “I’m going to wash your mouth out (literally).” Considering a spiritual breach, recall Christ’s statement to His disciples when they asked why the demons they tried to cast out did not obey them – “..This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting” (Mark 9:29). This means that a breach in the spirit needs to be handled with spiritual weapons.

“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;” 2 Corinthians 10:4 KJV

In addition to prayer and fasting, the spoken word is a spiritual weapon against the proclamation of the enemy. Do not think it is too simple: in fact, it is just basic enough to be applicable to nearly any situation. The spoken word is a spiritual tool when the words are spoken are based on the truths of God. It can be the precursor of other actions – that is, it can be used alone or better yet, with the undergirding of prayer and fasting too.

As believers, we should learn to bridle our tongues, even if we are angry. God did not command us to be without emotion. He commanded us not to use our emotions (such as anger (Ephesians 4:26)) as an excuse to commit sin. This ability is championed by God. With it, we are able to control not only our words but also our actions.

For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. James 3:2 KJV

Under the power of God, the cloven tongue of the Holy Spirit is able to give holy utterance.

1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Acts 2:1-4 KJV

Also, we have in the Holy Scriptures the concept that it takes the Spirit of God, His virtue, to rid the tongue of its poison – a true venom as noted in James 3:8.

“5 Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts. 6 Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: 7 And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.” Isaiah 6:5-7 KJV

“Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.” Matthew 5:11 KJV

When we see the use of “shall” in the Word, it is evidence of a promise. These are not things that might happen on a good day. These are things we can use to gird our confidence.

And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in. Isaiah 58:12

What does it mean to be souled out to God?

The Bible says that nothing [but sin] can separate us from the love of Jesus, not life or death, nor persecutions, nor anything else that the enemy could bring against us. It also says that the soul winner is wise (Proverbs 11:30). So, we are empowered by our connection to Christ’s love, to win souls to His kingdom after that we ourselves have become members of his own body. THE FIRST SOUL WE MUST TEND IS OUR OWN.

To be souled out to God means to give up or be willing to give up or disregard personal gain for the glory of His kingdom; a play on the words “sold out” means to have no more soul left for any other endeavor; to be completely under God’s leadership and living in His will. Paul was an example of someone souled out to God. He counted every worldly thing as naught to gain the crown of Christ.

7 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. 8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, 9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: 10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; 11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead. Philippians 3:7-11 KJV

Being souled out to God causes everything else in your life to come behind and not before your commitment to your Creator and Savior. When you are sould out, you have a precedent for making decisions when anything comes in conflict with your faith. You can literally ask, “What would Jesus do?”

I remember being a new convert of fifteen tender years of age. I was totally on fire for Christ. I joined every youth group and even became the leader of a few of them. As I got older, I found myself drifting from the center of God’s will. I later returned after a life storm. What I want to say is that if you are souled out to God, He will not easily let you move away from His presence. There will be opportunities for you to return to Him.

When you hear or see or feel the LORD calling out to you, “In the day you hear my voice harden not your heart”, turn away from what distracts you and return to being souled out for Him. Then reach out and bring into His presence, everyone you know. I write this blog not to show that I am a Bible scholar, but in faith that someone will ask, “What must I do to be saved?” That is the proof of my wisdom, to be able to win souls as a direct result of being souled out.
