The Seeds of Promise series was inspired by the metaphor of a living seed, from which a child grows in the mother’s womb. It is a seed of promise, a possibility as the song says, “a great big bundle of potentiality.”
Galatians 4 lets us know that Abraham had two sons. One was of the flesh – planned parenthood, purposefully begotten of man’s own will. The other child was of promise: spoken into existence by the angel of the Lord, begotten at His divine appointment, named by God and rendered to His service, chosen before birth, and born at God’s commandment.
Sometimes, young and or unwed mothers are pressured to abort their children. I too had this pressure before the birth of my son. But I took to heart the story of Hannah. The morning I went into labor, I had a vision. I was talking with my primary care doctor. I told him that I would not be able to have a natural childbirth. I did not know why that was the case, but I would need to have a C-section.
About twelve hours later, I was near death in a hospital. The baby’s heartbeat was not registering on the monitor. There were several nurses and my doctor in the birthing room. My doctor handed me a document to sign. I was asked if I wanted the doctor to try to save me or my baby – because one or both of us could be lost during this procedure. I said, “Save my son.”
From the day I knew I was having a child, I knew I would have a son. His name had already been chosen nearly two decades earlier:
In the WORD, we read, be careful to entertain strangers (Hebrews 13:2) because some have entertained angels unawares. We do not know whether God has chosen a child from the seed itself. For this cause among others, we are pro-life. And if we have no children and no husband (or wife), then we are espoused to God and all of His children are our children. Christ said that whosoever does His commandments is His mother and father and sister and brother (Mark 3:35), etc.
And since man (all people) was created to praise God, how much more is He pleased when we who are taught in the word do raise up our children to know Him even from their youth (Deuteronomy 11, Proverbs 22:6), that they may walk with Him for their lifetime. Every child then, should be lent to the Lord. This is a major key to the problems facing youth today. They need to know God early – not ritualistically, but personally, that the love of Christ may be made manifest in their hearts and minds. Jesus loves the little children.
Affirmation
Lord, I thank you, by the blood of Jesus that no good thing will be withheld from me because I walk upright before you in your presence. You are my sun and shield. You Lord will give grace and honor. Your peace rules in my heart. You have called and anointed me for your purpose. I seek your perfect and divine will. You, LORD, are my source and strength, a very present help.
