Reflection
In today’s reading, David delegated every work of the house of God, including assignment of priests, officers, treasurers, gatekeepers, and twenty-four divisions of musicians. Each delegation included the help of many. No person was to carry on the work of the temple alone.
God loves us. He understands that Kingdom building can be stressful. He does not intend to put on our shoulders, more than we can bear – though his faith in our possibilities may be more than the potential we see in ourselves. He has designed a system that is decent and in order. God appreciates good leadership and also compares his obedient to tender sheep who follow. We must understand our personality type and resist controlling urges that will not allow us to be duly aided because we feel we must do everything ourselves.
Delegating authority is not only helpful to the leader, it is beneficial to the delegate, who is thereby able to learn and grow, as this work should be completed under the leader’s supervision. Leaders have the responsibility to share their expertise in this way, that future leaders may receive proper instruction to carry on the Lord’s perfect work.
When Moses judged the people of Israel, his work continued morning and night (Exodus 18:13) as he attempted to solve the matters presented to him, according to the statutes of God and His laws. Moses was no doubt at a loss for rest, wearing himself much too thin.
God has all power in His hands. When He calls you to His service, He is not looking for a super man or a wonder woman. Whatsoever power you may need to accomplish his perfect work, He can give it to you – whether it be gifts of the spirit, or arts by education, whether spoken word or lived epistle – you can do all things through Christ who strengtheneth you (Philippians 4:13 ). God is looking for faithfulness; and to that He can add anything.
Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, a priest of Midian, gave Moses some good advice.
Exodus 18:17-23
17 And Moses’ father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good. 18 Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone. 19 Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God: 20 And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do. 21Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens: 22 And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee. 23 If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.
It is important to recognize that there were specific qualities required for delegates, who would essentially be under shepherds, following Moses as he followed God. When you delegate authority, it is important that those chosen be not only able to carry out the task assigned, but they should people who fear God. This is not a fraidy-cat, but someone who reverences God and will perform the work according to His will. They should be people of truth – persons who are accountable and trustworthy, who will not be seduced by worldly gain, but will understand the value of work and the source of all good things, who will be eligible for a righteous reward (1 Timothy 5:18).
Exodus 18:24-27
24 So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said. 25 And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. 26 And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves. 27 And Moses let his father in law depart; and he went his way into his own land.
We read in James 1:17 that every good and perfect gift is from God. Thank God for His delegation, which He has tasked with your aid, to wit you shall be able to perform His perfect work.
