Today’s reading highlights people appointed for spiritual service. During the generations described by the genealogy delineated in Chronicles, the offices of the Priests and Levites were hereditary. I Chronicles 6:33 informs us that the spiritual servants waited upon (served) their offices with their sons (descendants) (I Chronicles 6:33).

Some were appointed to the service of song:

31And these are they whom David set over the service of song in the house of the LORD, after that the ark had rest. 32And they ministered before the dwelling place of the tabernacle of the congregation with singing, until Solomon had built the house of the LORD in Jerusalem: and then they waited on their office according to their order. I Chronicles 6:31-32

Some were appointed to all manner of service (except the most holy):

Their brethren also the Levites were appointed unto all manner of service of the tabernacle of the house of God. I Chronicles 6:48

And some, namely Aaron and his sons, were appointed to the service of the most holy things:

49But Aaron and his sons offered upon the altar of the burnt offering, and on the altar of incense, and were appointed for all the work of the place most holy, and to make an atonement for Israel, according to all that Moses the servant of God had commanded.

Think about it: Before Christ’s total sacrifice of his life in atonement for all sin, there was a veil between mankind and God. Oh, but see how much has changed!

Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; Matthew 27:50-51

Today, you can stand in the tabernacle, or under the open sky for that matter, and communicate directly with God. Even if your parents are not missionaries, you can be one. Even if your family has never set foot in a church, you could still be called of God to pastoral ministry.

God still makes appointments of various people to various works of ministry. The difference is that you are no longer bound by genealogy; and need not be slave either, to the law of sin and death. You have the right to the statute of liberty through the Spirit of God. (James 1:25, Galatians 5:13, Isaiah 61:1)

Most importantly, Jesus was risen to life with all power! Through His blood you have access to forgiveness. You do not need to sacrifice any chickens, or bullocks, and certainly not any person (as the manner of some is). You are free indeed when the Spirit of the Lord does make you free (John 8:36).
