Today’s Devotional: A Measure of Faith
14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, 16That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; 17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; 19And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
How much faith is in a “measure of faith”? All believers are said to have this measure. Why then, are some people seemingly more “faithful” (full of faith) than others? If God is no respecter of persons, then should not all people have the same amount of faith? These questions are common to faith-slim – they who are lacking in faith.
The measure of faith is like that grain of mustard seed (Luke 13:9, Luke 17:6). Each believer has the same starting grain. However, like as a planted crop that must be tended – watered, cultivated, watched for choking weeds, etc., the faith seed must be tended and guarded also. A faith seed unkept will remain a seed; and that seed will not grow. However the seed was not planted for observation. The seed of faith is planted by God in order to bring forth fruit of faith.
Every spiritual gift is made manifest according to faith. It is written, “These signs shall follow them that believe…
Thus without faith, it is impossible to use our spiritual gifts. Even prophecy must be given according to faith (Romans 12:6) – for without faith it is impossible to please God.
Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. This is the first step in increasing our faith. As we prepare to enter a new year according to God’s will, let us be about our Father’s business, working in love, increasing our measure of faith and girding those who doubt, that they might also believe on Christ and the Holy Spirit may shower us that we be reconciled to the Father.
Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.
15 Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints, 16 Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers; 17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: 18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, 19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, 20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, 21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: 22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, 23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.
1 For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles, 2 If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward: 3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words, 4 Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ) 5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit; 6 That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel: 7Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power. 8 Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; 9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: 10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God, 11 According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord: 12 In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.
15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. 17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
Lord, I thank you, by the blood of Jesus that no good thing will be withheld from me, because I walk upright before you in your presence. You are my sun and shield. You Lord will give grace and honor. Your peace rules in my heart. You have called and anointed me for your purpose. I seek your perfect and divine will. You, Lord are my source and strength, a very present help.
