The Meditation of Your Heart

Your testimony is a record of what you are thankful to God for. It is fuel for your praise. It is the “all He’s done for you” that you recall when you think of the goodness of Jesus. Despite knowing how much we would not have accomplished without our Savior, sometimes our praise falls flat. Usually, the reason we have trouble praising God is not because we are not thankful at all. It is typically the result of being bogged down with the stresses of life that seem to juice the energy out of our joy. Then, when we have the opportunity to testify, we may keep our seat because we do not feel that energizing desire to “tell it.” . Remember that the words of your mouth fuel the meditation of your heart (Psalm 19:14). Your heart is like a keyword search engine. The key words you speak out of your mouth “tag” images and other words and searches of your heart bank to rediscover experiences related to those keywords. This is the reason why the more you say things like, “I hate…” this or that, you will find yourself noticing more things everyday that you “hate.” It may seem that things you hate are happening more frequently all of a sudden. Actually, if your daily routine has not changed much, it is more likely that those very occurrences were already taking place in some form to some degree. The difference is that if your mind is “following” the keyword hate, things that trigger it’s definition (how it is defined in your own mind, and not necessarily the denotation (that’s why some things that bother you may not bother someone else because it’s largely according to how we personally define it)) are coming to the surface more frequently in your thought process (i.e. they are becoming the meditation of your heart.)

. The more you testify (say in your own words what and how much you are thankful to God for), the more your heart looks for reasons to do the same. Thus we see that the key to expanding your praise is more praise. That is the reason why congregations will have worship leaders (sometimes called praise teams) if they truly want people to grow in serving God. Praise opens our hearts and minds to receive what God wants us to have. Much of what we receive from God is a result of how we think about Him. Praise conditions our thoughts to hold Him in a place of reverence; to see Him as a loving Father; to understand His every work as something more than “coincidence” and to view our experience with Him as we go through life as deeply personal – not an arbitrary interaction as though we were just another face in the crowd. God knows each of us personally. You truly ARE a special person of great price to Him. Before you were born, He loved you. And nothing is beyond His sight. It is only the enemy who wants people to feel that they are not cared for – so he spends much of his reign trying to isolate us that we may feel pressed between a rock and a hard place.

You have heard that before you were formed in the belly, God knew you. It’s true. But that is not the whole story. Jeremiah 1:5 says that God not only knew who you were, He also ordained for you a purpose. You may not be a prophet, but your presence is by His design.

Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. Jeremiah 1:5

A Trinity Praise

There are always at least three things you can thank God for:

  • You can thank God for what He has already done.
  • You can thank God for what He is doing right now.
  • You can thank God for what He will do.
